MLB Network & NHL Network

Technical Director
In late 2017 I joined the NHL Network crew as a freelance technical director. The technical director is the one in charge of mixing the video signals and effects to create the final visual product of a live production. Within the first month of work, I was cleared to work all shows across NHL Network and train on MLB Network as well. Working across the two networks allowed for exposure to different experiences happening within the same building. Operating a 4.5 ME Grass Valley Kayenne, with 10 cameras, 4 EVS channels, 5 font overlays, 3 playback channels, and 20 remote inputs, along with different graphics packages for each show across both networks. Being freelance many of the effects and boxes needed for shows are pre-built by the staff TDs. Even with many effects pre-built, the need to build effects on the fly exists meaning that TDs are more than button pushers but know the ins and outs of the equipment they are operating. I have built complex multi-ME and split ME effects to achieve large-scale and AR-style effects in live broadcasts.
On-air troubleshooting is another huge part of my job, being if a camera goes down, or a font channel gets locked up how to mitigate the effect that it will have on air. This especially comes into play during remote shows where connections can drop with little or no notice forcing creative problem-solving on the fly.
